Marketing mixed with IT, design and coding, all these things are part of a webmaster’s job.
At least they were.

I am not a server administrator, but 7 years ago that was still part of the webmaster job. This is impossible in todays world and most webmaster jobs nowadays focus on the communication side. Communication and marketing, usability and user experience: these are are all the hit words of 2011 and you have to have them on your CV.

One thing is very clear about what a webmaster does: handle communication between business and IT. You have to be able to talk to a programmer/sysadmin as well as talk to one of the board members.

Can you handle a sentence that consists of nothing but acronyms?
Can you say one that a business person doesn’t understand, but IT does?
Can you do the same for the IT person?

Hiring people is not my job, but I am a webmaster and I was asked to create a questionnaire to check the technical knowledge of the webmaster candidate.
The questionnaire focuses on 4 areas:

• Marketing / SEO / Communication
• Web development, client side
• Usability / Accessibility
• Web development – server side

The 4 fields are a bit crammed together, I know, but you need to limit the number of questions a bit. Below are the questions and answers with some remarks. Candidates took between 45 minutes to 1 hour to answer all of them.

The questions are both specific and open. Not everything (definitely no server setup questions anymore) is covered but it is a good start to measure the technical knowledge of you webmaster candidate.

1. Len: What would your definition of Information Architecture (IA) look like in less then 256 characters?

   Dani: IA is the first step to make a rational design of anything

2. Len: This is a very short one, what do you mean with "design"? Can you tell a bit more about that?

   Dani: IA is the first step to make a rational design of anything. When you think about a (web) design, there’s a first step: the schema of this design. How very little elements must be placed, ordered and located

3. Len: Is there a specific way or method in Spain that you feel is different then in Europe with this approach?

   Dani: No. I think there’s no specific method to make this work. Fortunately technical issues are independent of places, countries and cultures. The only difference with Spanish people is about language. Because Spanish is a very rich language, Spanish has a lot of different words to express the same concept. I think this is an advantage, but it has no direct relation with methodology.

4. Len: You make a clear distinction between language, which relates to labels in IA, and the methodology that you use.
   As you mention that Spanish is a rich language, doesn’t that mean you need richer tools to get the best result?

   Dani: Interesting question. But I think it’s not an issue about tools. IMHO different languages and semantic features can become great tools to make good IA. I only can work with spanish, my native language, but is possible that other languages and his semantic features give IA’s tools to get the best result. Finally I thnik, again, it’s a very interesting question to think about

5. Len: Are you working on multi lingual websites/systems?

   Dani: Yes, but generally these multilingual sites are related with two Spanish languages: Catalan and Basque

6. Len: Which means you are using a one to one translation and no localisation?

   Dani: In catalan case, semantic features of the language are very very similar to Spanish; in case of the Basque language, work is more one to one translation than localisation

7. Len: If you talk to clients and companies, do you feel that they know about these things: IA, usability and related fields?

   Dani: Not generally, but practice application of deliverables are a grateful thing to them. Obviously some clients request work about IA and usability, but the major clients don’t know about this. These kind of clients must be seduced by presenting them deliverables: wireframes are a key deliverable to make clients understand the importance of information design in a web project.

8. Len: So you don’t talk about IA to clients, you just show them IA?

   Dani: Yes. I don’t talk about IA to clients, if clients don’t talk about IA. I try not to "spam" clients with concepts that they don’t care about. Clients want usable web sites where the information about their product can be found and is clear to the visitor.

9. Len: What is the future of IA in Spain, is there a movement towards IA?

   Dani: I’m just a little practitioner to say what the future is of IA in Spain I can tell you there is a professional community of IA’s and usability professionals called ‘Cadius’ ( www.cadius.org ) of which I’m member. Every month there are meetings in different cities, called ‘Cocktail Cadius’, where professionals and interested people about IA and usability (and web design) talk about day-to-day and professional issues in this field. I organize Cocktail Cadius in Zaragoza, the city where I live.

10. Len: Can you give IAs some tips and or resources that can help them to become good IAs?

    Dani: Wow… I only can give one: read, read, and read. The best resources I know are books, and some web sites: www.cadius.org/weblog , www.alzado.org and www.thinkepi.net (in Spanish). And Boxes and Arrows ( www.boxesandarrows.com ), Guuui ( www.guuui.com ), and Bloug ( http://louisrosenfeld.com/ ) in English. But, again, my favorite tool: read, read, and read.

11. Len: Ok, thank you for the somewhat distracted interview.

    Dani: Thx to you

Peter Boersma leeft in Amsterdam, Nederland en werkt daar als UX consultant voor het bedrijf Info.nl (blog). Hij co-organiseerde de EuroIA (blog) conferentie en verzorgt de keynote op de opkomende IA Summit in Italië (blog). Je komt hem tegen op de IA Cocktail hours in Amsterdam en met wat geluk op de IA Meetings in Brussel.

1. Len: Als je IA moet omschrijven in 256 karakters, wat moet er dan in zitten?

   Peter: Ah, ja, daar kon ik me op voorbereiden.
   Ik heb een tweeledige definitie:

   1) Little IA: define underwater information structure to allow creation, indexing and finding.

   2) Big IA: defines front-end information structure to allow selection, understanding, and actioning.

   (Maar Big IA heet tegenwoordig vaak UX)

2. Len: Tijdens de EuroIA conferentie kwam het idee naar boven dat door het feit dat we allemaal een andere taal spreken, er eigenlijk voor Europa geen echt Informatie Architectuur concept bestaat. Maar iedereen had er wel zijn ideeën over.

   Nu, bestaat er zoiets als een IA concept in Nederland, waar ligt de focus in Nederland?

   Peter: Hmm, ik wou iets schrijven over dat Nederland traditioneel een service-land was en is, maar daar kan ik niet zo veel mee, bij nader inzien.
   Ik merk wel dat veel leden van de IA community zich met een breder vakgebied dan Little IA bezig houden.
   Ze zijn meer User Experience practitioners, die Ia als een deel van hun takenpakket zien.
   Een hele gezonde instelling, volgens mij.
   Ik geloof dat de meeste van hen IA zien als de vorm van Web IA die Lou Rosenfeld en Peter Morville hebben uitgehakt met hun boek Information Architecture for the World Wide Web.
   In mijn definitie omvat UX usability en (op interactie toegepaste) grafische vormgeving.

3. Len: Zijn er dan geen initiatieven in Nederland die het veld verder uitdiepen in de praktijk?

   Peter: Nou, zoals je weet organiseer ik zelf sinds 2001 de Amsterdam IA Cocktail Hours waar ik langzamerhand ook het idee van presentaties en discussies geïntroduceerd heb.
   Daar wordt wel gesproken over definities, nieuwe boeken, goeie recources, en de toekomst van IA.

4. Len: Kan je een boek of website aan bevelen?

   Peter: hmm, voor de Big IA kant wel: Jesse James Garrett’s "The Elements of User Experience".
   Van de Little IA kant weet ik zelf te weinig af om een goed boek aan te kunnen raden…
   Boxes and Arrows is als website eigenlijk de enige consistente publicatie op ons vakgebied. Ik wou dat de IA Wiki ook kon noemen, maar het onderhoud daarvan is sporadisch te noemen…

5. Len : In de omgang met klanten en bedrijven, merk je dan dat ze bewust zijn van zaken zoals IA, UX en aanverwanten? Volgen de bedrijven in Nederland die evolutie op het terrein?

   Peter: Ik zal deze vraag beantwoorden, maar ik vrees dat ik niet representatief ben voor heel Nederland. Onze klanten zijn bedrijven of web agencies die beseffen dat ze een UX dienst nodig hebben; zij hebben dat proces al doorgemaakt. Soms is dat heel rudimentair en zitten ze nog in het "Jakob Nielsen" tijdperk:
   Alles heet usability en de "3 click" rule is de maat.

   Dan moeten we ze wel eens up-to-speed brengen en vertellen wat mensen zoals Jared Spool en kortnuiten hebben ontdekt. (met de 38e proefpersoon in een test die een showstoper ontdekt, of de Scent of Information theorie)

   Andere klanten zijn verder: die weten van Web2.0 (dat heeft ook in een aantal landelijke bladen gestaan) en vragen om het inbouwen van tags, of user-contributed content en vragen hoe wij het social network van hun klanten kunnen inzetten.

6. Len: Deze vraag is min of meer al beantwoord. Wat is de grootste barrière om UX en/of IA processen in te bouwen in het ontwikkel proces van een website of applicatie?

   Peter: Helaas is het besef van waarde nog steeds de grootste barrière…
   
   Te vaak worden wij ingeschakeld om in 3 dagen even een site structuur in elkaar te draaien, terwijl wij user research, een content inventaris, matching van gebruikersdoelen met content willen doen en DAN pas een structuur in 2 dagen in elkaar kunnen zetten, bespreken en afmaken.

   En dat kost nou eenmaal 8 dagen (voor een kleine site, en met nog wat disclaimers)

7. Len: Er is dus te weinig kennis van het proces, hoe alles in elkaar past?

   Peter: Vooral dat eerste, dat tweede maakt voor veel bedrijven niet zoveel uit; dat is voor ons, de experts. Maar nog meer van de *waarde* van ons werk; waar het bijdraagt in het terugverdienen van het geïnvesteerde geld.

8. Len: Dan de laatste vraag, kan je tips geven hoe je een betere IA kunt worden?

   Peter: Mijn tip zou zijn om, vooral in het begin van het ontwerp (of evaluatie!) proces vaak de vraag "Waarom?" te stellen.
   Als een klant zegt dat bepaalde content op de site moet komen, vraag je "waarom". Als-ie dan zegt dat het ook op de huidige site staat, vraag je "waarom".
   Als er dan gezegd wordt dat afdeling X deze content levert, vraag je "waarom?".

   Zo kom je achter de redenen waarom informatie aangeboden wordt, en uiteindelijk waarom dat volgens de aanbieder goed is voor de gebruikers.
   Als je het proces herhaalt bij de gebruiker, kom je erachter waar de match zit (of niet).

   En dan kun jij je werk als IA pas goed doen!

9. Len: En om zo een ander doel bewust te kunnen voorstellen?

   Peter: Ja, of de klant duidelijk te maken waarom een indeling in afdelingen niet werkt, of waarom een deel van de informatie op een andere manier aangeboden moet worden, of waarom er geld in het produceren van andere content gestoken moet worden.
   (of zelf waarom een klant een andere business moet starten, maar dan gaan we erg ver)

10. Len: Bedankt, en misschien tot binnenkort?

    Peter: Jij kon niet naar Vancouver komen, he? Dan moet het een Brusselse IA Meetup worden, of een Cocktail Hour hier in de buurt, voor we elkaar weer zien…

Something that might prove a problem when publishing stuff on the internet (have a look at the website of the European Union ) and it is something that a lot of IAs in Europe are trying to solve.
